Clean Air Campaign
About
In 2019, Friends of the Earth Newbury set up 40 monitoring stations over a month's period to track air quality in our local area. Our results found the Burger King roundabout (A339 Greenham Road) to have the worst levels of pollution, in fact exceeding the government guidelines. As a result, our council have spent approximately £1.5 million pounds improving the Cheap Street Junction to alleviate the problem.

We also focused on Thatcham's Level Crossing as a point of high pollution, campaigning for drivers to switch off their engines whilst waiting. Leading on from this, permanent signage has been installed to encourage commuters to participate in helping to reduce levels.

The council have been very effective so far at finding solutions, but more can always be done. You could write to our local MP, Laura Farris, demanding better air quality around West Berkshire and oppose future projects that could jeopardise this, an example being the HS2 railway project.
